Dina Asher-Smith finishes fourth in the women’s 200m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Dina Asher-Smith was agonisingly close to landing a medal in the women’s 200m final at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old from Orpington finished fourth in a time of 22.22secs, just two hundredths of a second behind America’s Brittany Brown, who took bronze.

The race was won by America’s Gabby Thomas in a blistering 21.83, with Julien Alfred second in 22.08.

British champion Asher-Smith said: “I’m proud of that performance, it was a really strong field and I was really proud to have held my own.

“I was told to get out and keep going, I had fun doing that. You normally run more strategically and it’s not often you get that instruction.”

Asher-Smith finished fifth in the 200m final in 2016 in 22.31 and pulled out of the event at the Tokyo Olympics due to a hamstring injury.

She failed to make the 100m final in Paris but will have another chance at picking up a medal in the 4x100m relay later this week.
