David Beckham ended up being the star attraction as son Romeo made a first appearance for his new club on a rainy night in Kent.
Romeo Beckham, 20, was making his debut for Brentford B and came off the bench to play Erith & Belvedere at Park View Road, in Welling, on Tuesday night - watched by a record crowd.
Brentford’s B team beat Southern Counties East Premier Division leaders Erith & Belvedere in the London Senior Cup, in front of a crowd of 553 - a biggest-ever crowd for the Deres at PVR. David Beckham was also in attendance to watch his young son.
Beckham snr was hoping to keep a low profile - dressed in a black rain coat - but was soon spotted and had to slip through a fence and undergrowth to leave the ground and avoid a mob of fans at the end of the game.
Beckham junior, who also plays in midfield, has joined Brentford B for the remainder of the 2022/23 season after joining on loan from MLS side Inter Miami.
Erith & Belvedere first-team coach Grant Duffy, speaking to the club after the 3-2 defeat, said: “I thought there was more than 500 but it was such a good crowd, it was a really nice atmosphere and it was nice to see so many of the younger children coming to see the first-team boys and the Brentford boys. It is a family-run club, the chairman and board really care, it was a great day for them and nice to see so many people - and apparently David Beckham was there but I didn’t spot him!"
Brentford won the match with two late goals, making it 2-2 on 88 minutes and winning it through Michael Olakigbe in stoppage-time.
Lewis Chambers had put the Deres ahead but Lucias Vine levelled for the Bees. Bradley Ryan put the hosts back in front shortly after the restart but Brentford progress in the cup thanks to a double in the closing stages.
Duffy said: “The boys did the club proud, especially considering who we were playing against, decent young players.
"It was a good competitive game and we were gutted how it ended."
Erith & Belvedere are 20 points clear at the top of the SCEFL Premier Division.
