A house party attended by about 100 people has been broken up by police.

People were dispersed by officers at the mass gathering in Whitstable Road, Canterbury, after a resident concerned over the Covid-19 risk called 101.

Canterbury is currently Kent's Covid-19 hotspot, following a surge in cases of the so-called Indian variant.

Meanwhile, the rule of six remains in force, meaning up to six people from multiple households - or a group of any size from just two households - are allowed to meet indoors.

Describing Friday's party, one neighbour said: "Around 100 twenty-somethings, unvaccinated, in a small house singing at the top of their voices.

"I get it that they want to have fun, but with the Indian variant in Canterbury, they are jeopardising the end of lockdown for everyone.

"It was like a wall of sound between Whitstable Road and St Dunstan's Close behind. There was also a guy staggering in the road trying to flag down a red taxi who had to avoid him."

Police were called at about 1.30am and are said to have arrived at the scene promptly.

A police spokesman said: "It was reported that a group of people were causing excess noise having left a nearby address and that some of the individuals became involved in an altercation.

"Officers attended, dispersed the group and spoke with potential witnesses at the scene.

"Enquiries to establish the full circumstances remain ongoing."
