Choosing to welcome a dog into your life is a monumental decision but for many one of the most rewarding things you could ever do.
Here, the Dogs Trust and Last Chance Animal Rescue (LCAR) profile 25 lovable pooches in Kent desperate for someone to give them a forever home they can call their own this Christmas….
Name: Mabel
Breed: Bulldog cross
Age: 17 months
Mabel at Canterbury Dogs Trust is a sweet, affectionate and beautiful bulldog cross who absolutely loves to play and be with her people.
Instantly friendly with everyone she meets, she jumps up to say a happy hello and get fussed over.
Sadly, the pup had her ears cropped, a practice that is illegal in the UK.
She will shower her new family with affection and joy in return for a loving home where she can be cherished.
Because Mabel is so bouncy, she cannot live with children under 12.
This bulldog needs a home with no cats or small children.
Name: Minnie
Breed: Boxer cross
Age: One-and-a-half
Minnie from the LCAR Edenbridge branch, is sadly underweight and will need lots of TLC and a loving home.
She can be shy at first but is happy and playful once she knows you.
Minnie is energetic and will need an active home.
She is a sweet, friendly girl and gets along well with other doggies.
Name: Teddy
Breed: Chihuahua, cross pomeranian, cross Jack Russell
Age: Seven
Lovely Teddy came to LCAR New Romney due to a change in his previous family's circumstances.
He lost one of his front legs when he was six-months-old in a trampoline accident, but this does not slow him down.
Teddy is very friendly and is happy to be handled, so can live with children over two.
He is housetrained and used to being left. He also travels well in the car.
It is not known if Teddy is good with cats, but he barks at them when he sees them in the garden, so to be safe he needs a home with no little fluffy pets.
Name: William
Breed: Rottweiler
Age: Two
Canterbury Dogs Trust resident William is a super playful, smart and loving dog who is looking for human best buddies.
The poor pooch has not had the best start in life, but despite this rescuers believe he will be a devoted companion to some very lucky adopters.
He is very active and will be great for someone who wants to get off the sofa and get moving.
Lovely William will happily live with other dogs and secondary school-aged kids.
The rottweiler will need to meet his adopters multiple times to build a strong bond prior to going home.
Name: Bodin
Breed: Malamute
Age: 10
Beautiful Bodin from LCAR Edenbridge has a big, loud character and like a typical malamute, he loves the sound of his own voice.
He loves to lay in the sun and run through water to cool himself down.
Bodin needs a very experienced adult-only home with knowledge of the breed and with limited visitors, as he needs a very slow introduction to new people.
He needs to be the only pet in the home and is good at meeting other dogs on the lead but can be dominant off the lead.
Despite this, Bodin would make a fantastic companion to someone who has the patience and understanding of his specific needs.
Name: Dexter
Breed: Miniature dachshund
Age: Two
Dexter the beautiful dapple-coloured dachshund loves to learn and play new things.
Once he gets to know you, he is a cuddly boy who enjoys getting cosy on the sofa.
Unfortunately, this pint-sized pup struggles to get along with dogs and new people, so he will need a home with only adults and no visiting or resident children.
He would prefer a quiet, rural home with a calm and predictable routine so he can get used to his new life without too much change or pressure.
Dexter will need a gradual introduction to being left on his own after a settling-in period so that he can get used to coping on his own.
He can be visited at Canterbury Dogs Trust.
Name: Jake
Breed: Beagle
Age: Six
Sadly Jake has been diagnosed with diabetes and has started to go blind.
This means he is desperately searching for a new adult-only home before he loses his sight completely.
He will need insulin injections twice a day but he is such a good boy and waits patiently as he knows a tasty carrot is coming.
Jake is a long-term resident of LCAR Edenbridge and very misunderstood. He has unfortunately come from a traumatic past which has caused him to bite when feeling threatened.
But once Jake trusts and knows you he is a very affectionate boy and loves a cuddle on the sofa.
Jake gets along with other dogs on walks but needs to be the only dog in the house as he gets protective over his food.
Name: Mojo
Breed: Labrador cross
Age: Two
Mojo is a lovely chocolate Labrador cross, who is very affectionate.
She is a wiggly, waggy girl who loves to play with toys, adores treats and enjoys being outside, especially if there is a paddling pool to splash in.
Mojo, who is at Dog Trust’s Canterbury branch, will say hello with full-body wags and then lean her body weight on you for a fuss.
She is very big and bouncy and can get strong on her lead, so her new owners will need to have the strength to cope with this.
Mojo loves human company and although she can be left for a couple of hours, she prefers not to be alone for the majority of her day.
She can be boisterous but would be happy to share her home with another confident dog that can tolerate her play style.
She cannot live with cats or small animals as she has a high chase drive, but can live with secondary school-aged children.
Name: Molly and Meg
Breed: Beagles
Age: Seven
This pair of seven-year-old beagles are looking for a home together.
Molly and Meg arrived at Last Chance New Romney because their owners were unable care for them anymore, due to their own health conditions.
Both girls have been together all their lives and have a close bond.
They are both friendly with other pups and have lived with a Labrador before.
Molly and Meg have been around children so we would suggest dog-savvy youngsters, 10 years and above, would be suitable housemates.
They have been okay around cats in their garden, but have never lived with any.
Name: Kenny
Breed: German shepherd
Age: Four
Poor Kenny has not had the best start in life but is a busy boy who loves training and being active.
He focuses beautifully if a tasty treat is on offer and this will not only help build a bond with him but also will be a great way to reward desired behaviours.
Head-turning handsome, his new garden should also have tall fences as he can jump quite high.
He can live with confident and sensible children aged 16 years and over who will interact nicely with him and give him space when he needs it.
Kenny would be best suited as an only dog and he cannot live with cats or small animals.
You can find out more at the Canterbury Dogs Trust site.
Name: Noel
Breed: Springer Spaniel
Age: Three-and-a-half
Noel is a busy, wiggly, waggy three-and-a-half-year-old Springer spaniel who loves to sniff.
A typical active spaniel, Noel can get a little nervous and would be best suited to a home in a rural location.
He needs a household that is calm and predictable with adopters who are willing to do lots of training and fun games with him.
Noel could live with children over 16, but they will need to be comfortable with excitable dogs.
Although not essential, Noel could live with another dog that has a similar play style as him and he would benefit from walking friends who will want to say a happy hello and then do lots of sniffing with him.
Noel cannot live with small furries and can be seen at the Canterbury Centre.
Name: Wednesday
Breed: Greyhound
Age: Six
Wednesday, from the Canterbury rehoming centre, was used for racing and has spent her whole life in kennels.
Due to this she has a high prey drive and will need to wear a muzzle on walks.
Equal parts lazy and playful, she loves having a zoom and playing around our big field, going for walks and spending time outdoors going on adventures but is also perfectly happy to snooze most of the day away on a big cosy bed.
She will need time and patience to learn the rules of a home and she will likely need housetraining, so her adopters will need to give her regular access to a secure and private garden to help her learn.
Wednesday would prefer to be the only dog in her home as she is a little bit worried when meeting other canines, and can’t live with little animals.
She can live with secondary school-aged youngsters.
Name: Luna
Breed: American bulldog
Age: Two-and-a-half
Lovely Luna came to LCAR Edenbridge with a litter of puppies, as her previous owner’s situation changed.
Now, all her babies have found new families, but she sadly hasn’t.
When Luna first came to the rescue, she was very wary of men and had so much energy to burn that she would become very frustrated, but she has since calmed down.
She is okay with other dogs but doesn't like any that are too boisterous or bouncy, so must be the only pet in the home.
This poor pooch did not seem to know what love was and used to freeze when receiving attention.
She now will jump up at her door every time you get her out for a quick cuddle and a fuss.
Luna needs a home with no children.
Name: Ronnie
Breed: English Bulldog
Age: 17 months
Canterbury Dog’s Trust resident Ronnie is adorable and laid-back. He craves a peaceful and comfortable existence as your loyal companion.
Ronnie can be frightened by loud or sudden noises but is easily calmed down by patience and reassurance.
Unfortunately, Ronnie is having ongoing medical care in the form of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions for his legs and hips.
His new owners will need to be willing to continue this for him.
Ronnie has previously lived with cats and has no issues around them so could potentially live with a canine-savvy moggy.
He isn't too fond of lots of chaos or noise but could live with some calm and mature teens aged 14 and over who would give him space.
Name: Buddy
Breed: Springer spaniel
Age: 18 months
Buddy was brought back to LCAR New Romney due to his behaviour in the home.
He is a very lovely pup who loves his owner very much and can become protective of them.
This playful boy loves long walks on the beach and enjoys a cuddle on his terms - he especially loves a groom.
It takes a while for Buddy to trust you and therefore, he can be unpredictable with strangers.
Buddy does resource guard items such as food and toys which his previous adopters have been working on.
He is looking for a home with no children, where he is the only pet.
Name: Walker
Breed: Lurcher
Age: Three
Walker is a super-friendly, bouncy and playful three-year-old lurcher with so much love to give his new family.
He loves to explore everywhere he goes and greets everyone he meets enthusiastically with lots of big wags of his tail.
Walker could live with children aged 14 and over who are confident with bigger dogs as he can be quite bouncy during play and needs to work on his manners when taking treats.
He would prefer to be the only dog in his home and will need his own secure garden to potter, play and stretch his legs in.
This boy will make a wonderful companion for a family who have the time and patience to give him lots of love.
Walker is at Canterbury Dogs Trust.
Name: Jake
Breed: Labrador
Age: Five to six years
Jake came to LCAR New Romney from a pound in Wales, so not much is known about his history.
He is a friendly boy who has a lovely fluffy coat. He would be delighted to find a family who want to go on lots of walks.
Jake also wants to have his own secure garden to run around in.
He would like for his new humans to be at home most of the time.
Due to the lack of information on Jake, the rescue has erred on the side of caution and suggested a home with no children.
Name: Bagel
Breed: Belgium shepherd cross
Age: 14 months
Canterbury Dogs Trust is looking for a special home for Bagel, specifically a quiet household with active owners who have previous experience owning dogs, preferably with Malinois or a working knowledge of the breed.
As he is a young, boisterous boy, Bagel would be best suited to an adult-only home with owners who can help him learn his basics and manners.
He can jump quite high, so needs a secure garden with 6ft tall fences.
Bagel will need visits from our behaviour team once he goes home so adopters will need to live within 45 minutes driving distance from the Canterbury Rehoming Centre.
Please bear this in mind before applying for him.
He cannot live with children or any other pets.
Name: Honey
Breed: Pomsky
Age: Five to six
Honey came to LCAR New Romney from a Welsh pound, so not much is known about her history.
She has since been rehomed twice, but recently been brought back to New Romney because her owner was unable to walk her.
Due to this Honey is now very overweight and is needing to lose a good few pounds.
Honey is a super sweet girl. Although the pomsky can be shy with new people, once she knows you she is fine.
She is untested with cats but seems okay with dogs on walks.
While out and about, Honey gets nervous and puts on the brakes, so might need coaxing to keep walking.
Honey needs a home with no children due to her unknown history and will need regular grooming of her lovely coat, which she enjoys.
Name: Max
Breed: Staffordshire bull terrier cross
Age: Two
Max from Dogs Trust Canterbury is a gorgeous, energetic staffy-cross with a heart as big as his head!
He is a real ‘people dog’ and is so friendly with everyone he meets that sometimes he forgets he is not a little lap dog.
This four-legged-friend always gives everything 110% and engages really well when he is interacting with his handlers.
Max likes toys, pats and always being on the go.
He will be an amazing companion who will live his life to please his family and be the best friend anyone could ask for.
Max would be best suited as the only pet in his home and any children in the home would need to be aged 16 years and over.
Name: Molly
Breed: Border collie
Age: Eight
Molly is described as a sofa-loving dog who is looking for a loving, calm home to settle into.
Although she can be a little shy at first, once a bond is built she is very attentive and sweet.
Molly’s favourite things are walks – especially in the woods – and learning new tricks.
She is really missing her home comforts and will make a very lovely and attentive addition to some lucky people.
Molly would prefer to be the only animal and have no kids in the home.
She will need weekly visits from the rescue’s behaviour training team, so adopters have to live within 45 minutes of the Canterbury Dogs Trust branch.
Name: Astrid
Breed: Dobermann
Age: Two
Astrid is a two-year-old dobermann who hasn't had the best start in life as she had her ears cropped.
She finds meeting strangers quite worrying, so she likes to take things slowly and build a bond before trusting people.
Once she gets to know you she is a playful and bouncy girl who loves to have a cuddle.
She is a clever girl and really enjoys training, and knows lots of commands already.
Astrid doesn't enjoy spending time with other dogs and is looking for a quiet, calm, home with minimal visitors.
She has been waiting for a home at Canterbury Dogs Trust for several months.
Astrid needs a home with no other pets or children.
Name: Anton
Breed: Lurcher
Age: Four
Four-year-old Anton is a big, fun bundle of love who adores a fuss and groom and will pretty much do anything for a tasty treat.
He loves playing with toys - the squeakier the better - and is a super-smart boy who is so keen to be involved in what you are doing and is very eager to please.
He loves walks in nice places and explores confidently.
Anton needs all his basic training and house training and so will need his own private and secure garden.
He would like a home with no other pets so he can relax, and any children in the home will need to be confident with big bouncy dogs and be 14 years old or over.
You can see Anton at the Canterbury Dogs Trust branch.
Name: Bonnie
Breed: Staffordshire bull terrier cross
Age: Two-and-a-half
Bonnie from Dogs Trust Canterbury is amazing, active, affectionate and fun.
She is full of love and has a fabulous zest for life, approaching everything she does with enthusiasm and a happy wag of her tail.
This staffy has lots of tricks under her belt - she can even do a commando crawl!
Bonnie is so much fun and she will play games and run around with you for as long as you will do it with her.
She adores interacting with her humans.
Bonnie does like to take her time when meeting new people as she can sometimes be a little worried.
But, with time, patience and some tasty treats she soon comes around and once a bond is built, she will be your best friend for life.
Bonnie is wary of men, so would need to meet any male family members lots of times first.
She needs a home with no other pets or children.
Name: Dom
Breed: Lurcher cross
Age: Four
Dom is looking for a calm, quiet and active home where he can enjoy a predictable routine in a consistent environment.
He can live with confident children aged 16 years and over.
Due to his breed, he does have a natural instinct to chase, so he is muzzle-trained and wears it happily on his walks.
For this reason, he would be best suited to being the only pet in his home, and any walking friends would need to be medium to large size.
He will need his own secure garden with high fences as he can jump quite high, so a 6ft minimum will be ideal!
He adores human company, so when he first goes home he would prefer not to be left alone at all and to have his leaving time introduced slowly and positively once he has properly settled in.
Dom, who you can visit at Dogs Trust Canterbury, is a sweet boy who will make a really lovely best buddy for a lucky home.
