Startled students saved an African parrot from a magpie attack after it flew headfirst into a window at their university.

The exotic Fischer's lovebird was left dazed after hitting the glass pane and then found itself fighting off its attackers.

Students at Canterbury Christ Church University rushed to its rescue and managed to catch the parrot and put it in a shoe box.

The bird - which hails from Tanzania and has a green back, chest and wings, a golden yellow neck and a red beak - is not thought to have been hurt.

It has now been handed in for safekeeping at the Barton Veterinary Hospital in New Dover Road, Canterbury.

Vet Helen Groves says the bird is likely to have escaped from a cage or aviary and will be re-homed if not claimed within a week.
