A Chinese restaurant could be at risk of losing its licence for routinely employing illegal workers.

Immigration officers have visited Cafe de China in St George’s Place, Canterbury, on multiple occasions, and have found illegal workers on each visit.

Despite “heavy fines” being paid by the all-you-can-eat restaurant and noodle bar, police say it continued to employ staff illegally.

They have now applied for the city council to review the business’ premises licence.

It listed “prevention of crime and disorder” and “public safety” - namely the use of illegal workers - as grounds for the review.

In the review document, Canterbury PC James Gall wrote: “Kent Police submit this application to review Cafe de China in order to promote and protect the licensing objectives of the prevention of crime and disorder and public safety.

“This review is following a number of Immigration Enforcement visits to the location by immigration officers.

“Each visit has identified a number of illegal workers and, despite heavy fines being given and paid, the premises operated in the same way.”

Anyone wishing to make representations should send them to the city council by August 6.
