A web page featuring funny and embarrassing photographs of scenes in Canterbury is proving a sensation in the city.

Called Spotted in Canterbury, it appears on social networking site Facebook and features everything from a husband-to-be chained to a lamppost smeared in some kind of white sauce to a car covered in fake fur.

The page has already attracted almost 13,000 “likes” since it started just two weeks ago.

But its creators say they want to remain anonymous.

They told the Gazette: “We’re doing this mainly to keep the focus on our fantastic fans whose photos we simply re-post.

“We love Canterbury, and wanted a place to celebrate its diversity and good humour.”

Among the most popular photographs on the page are a dog in a hi-visibility jacket standing next to two similarly-dressed gas repairmen, a bus which has veered half on to the grass at the University of Kent and a man pictured cruising around the Wincheap roundabout in a mobility scooter.

Elsewhere, a picture of a ewe and her lamb sauntering through the Hales Place estate is captioned: “Residents on their way to the baa.”

Artist Aaron Beha, 39, of Castle Street, is among those amused by Spotted in Canterbury. He said: “I did find some of the photos very funny and it’s good that they’re in Canterbury.

“I was worried people might find it all a bit voyeuristic, though.”
