Plans for a supermarket on the former Herne Bay golf club have been scrapped as the developer and chain were unable to agree terms.

Tesco will no longer build a store on the site after the supermarket group’s strategic plans did not marry with the vision of developers Quinn Estates.

The developer has replaced the supermarket with about 100 more homes and commercial units in its latest proposals.

The number of jobs now set to be created at the site stands between 600 and 700 rather than more than 1,000 with Tesco.

The number of new homes earmarked for the golf club site is set to rise from about 500 to 600 under the new scheme.

There will be another six or seven commercial units measuring 100 to 200 sq ft constructed, and some additional retail space.

The plans also involve building a sports hub for Herne Bay, which will include football, hockey and cricket pitches, as well as clubhouse facilities for teams in the town.

Quinn Estates managing director Mark Quinn said: “It’s been frustrating, but that’s life.

"Tesco has undergone a shake-up and negotiations broke down.

“It is unfortunate but that’s the way it is.”
