A man has today been charged with sexual assault following reports a woman was attacked in a Whitstable alleyway.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Nelson Road after neighbours reported hearing a disturbance at about 9.50pm on Monday.

A woman in her 30s was treated by paramedics and a 37-year-old man from Whitstable was arrested.

Balasuntharam Sasikumar, of West Cliff, Whitstable, has been charged with sexual assault and is due to appear before magistrates via video link next Wednesday.

Witnesses, who saw the aftermath, said there were about five police cars at the scene and the alleyway was cordoned off.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw or heard a distressed woman in the Nelson Road area at the Island Wall junction.
