And the bouncing baby weighed..around 80 kilos!

Howletts Wild Animal Park in Canterbury is celebrating the arrival of a new elephant - almost two years after mum first fell pregnant.

African calf Etana was born just before Christmas to mother Swana, who was also born at Howletts in 1985.

Etana, which means “strong one” in Swahili,

is Swana’s third calf.

She joins brother, Janu, who is almost four and a sister, Umna, now 11. Father to all three calves is 32-year-old Jums, from Zimbabwe.

Head of the elephant section, Dave Magner said:

“The baby is adjusting very well to its new surroundings and family, gaining the usual three to five kilos every week. She was keen to get out into the paddock very quickly and appears to have bonded very well with her mum.”
