Part of a city centre has been sealed off so police and a bomb disposal team could move in.

Emergency services are focussing on the North Lane Car Park in Canterbury, after a Second World War munition was found in the nearby Great Stour river.

The site has been cordoned off.

An MOD spokesman described the find as a Second World War vintage practice bomb and said its teams had taken the device away to be exploded.

It would have been used in training.

Nearby roads including North Lane and St Dunstan's Street were also guarded by police patrols.

A Kent Police spokesman added: "Kent Police is attending a report of a suspected wartime munition found in the Great Stour.

"Officers were called to the scene at 9.25am on Sunday.

"A cordon has been set up around the area as a precaution and the EOD have been made aware.

The MOD spokesman added: "The EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] squad were called at about 10.30am today and they have cleared the site now and taken the item away.

"No further action is required."
