A quick-thinking burglary victim tracked down a man who had stolen his wallet by logging on to his banking app to see where his debit card was being used by the thief.

The theft happened in Aylesham when 43-year-old Karl Armitage called at the victim's property asking him if he wanted to buy fishing gear.

The homeowner declined but as he returned to his kitchen, he heard the back door slam and then discovered his wallet containing bank cards and cash had been stolen from his conservatory.

Then using his banking app, the victim noticed unauthorised transactions and quickly went to the shop where his cards were being used where he recognised the man who had called at his home.

With the assistance of members of the public, the suspected thief was detained until police arrived and arrested him.

It happened in December and Armitage, of St Albans Road, Hersden, appeared before Canterbury Crown Court this month, after admitting burglary and two counts of fraud.

He was jailed for two years and one month.

Investigating officer DC Kerry Akast said: "Entering someone’s home and stealing their property can result in people not feeling safe in their own property.

"Thankfully, in this instance, the quick-thinking actions of the victim allowed us to arrest Armitage and put forward a compelling case.

"He had no other option but to admit his crimes and I hope the custodial sentence will give him time to reflect on his actions."
