CHILLI powder containing an illegal dye could be contained in products on sale in parts of the county.

Sudan I can cause cancer and is not permitted in foodstuffs at any level but has been used in products containing chilli powder, imported to Britain from India.

Products from the Rajah range including Tandoori Masala, Natural Tandoori Masala, Jerk seasoning, Chilli and Lemon seasoning, Oriental Noodle seasoning and Chicken seasoning have all been withdrawn from sale.

Only those with a best before end date up to July 18, 2005, are affected.

Canterbury City Council environmental health officer Jenny Newton said: "We would urge anyone who thinks they have bought one of these products to check the best before dates.

"If they have any which are affected by this warning, they should return them to where they bought them and get a refund."
