Candle sparks summer house fire in Bridge

Two fire engines were called after a candle set alight to a summer house.

The blaze happened in Pippin Avenue in Bridge, near Canterbury, at around 12.20pm.

Firefighters believe it was caused accidentally when a candle was left unattended and spread to other pieces of furniture.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using hose reel jets and main jets.

No injuries were reported.

Following the fire, Kent Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning to people about leaving naked flames unattended.

A spokesman said: “To help reduce the risk of an emergency, candles should always be positioned in a suitable holder, on a non-flammable surface and well away from anything that could catch alight.

“If you need to leave the room, remember to blow the candle out.”
