Canterbury City Council staff are busy gritting the district's car parks and pathways as the cold snap continues.

Officials were due to collect 40 tonnes of salt on Thursday to help keep the area moving.

In the last three weeks, 80 tonnes of rock salt have been applied throughout the district, including pathways, car parks and salt bins.

However, with predictions of the low temperatures and ice continuing, the council has warned residents it will have to prioritise its distribution schedule.

City council spokesman Steve James said: "We have tried to ensure that all areas of the district are receiving adequate distribution of rock salt and grit, but advise everyone, pedestrians and motorists, to exercise extreme caution when being out and about.

"Temperatures across the district are expected to remain low, and the road surface temperature will remain particularly low."

Waste collections were also suspended on Thursday due to the weather conditions. A very limited collection will be carried out in Canterbury city centre.

The situation will be reviewed during the rest of the week.
