A man is still fighting for his life in hospital this evening after he was found unconscious following a suspected attack in Canterbury last night.
Police and ambulance crews were called to St Dunstan's Street in the city centre at just after 7pm to reports of an assault.
A man in his 30s was found slumped on the pavement, unresponsive.
He is thought to have been punched in the head during a dispute with another person, before falling to the floor and hitting his head on the pavement.
He suffered serious head injuries in the fracas, and was rushed to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford in a life-threatening condition.
The victim was later transferred to King's College Hospital, in London, where he remains today.
The area around the outside of the Bishop's Finger pub was sealed off for several hours while officers investigated and took photos of the crime scene.
Police have since arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of assault and he remains in custody.
This evening, detectives issued a renewed appeal for witnesses to the attack, which happened near the junction with Linden Grove.
Detective Inspector Max Davidson said: "During this time this area of the city would still have been quite busy.
"We are asking anyone who may have witnessed an assault or who has any information which will help our enquiries to call us immediately."
Anyone with information is asked to call DI Davidson on 01227 868235 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting crime number ZY/020870/14.
