A well known city centre bar, popular with late-night revellers, could be stripped of its licence less than a fortnight before Christmas.

Managers of The Cuban face a review of their premises licence on the grounds of ‘prevention of crime and disorder’ and ‘public safety’.

The High Street venue is well-known in the city as a destination for customers wishing to drink into the early hours.

Its 3am weekend licence regularly sees queues form outside the building, shepherded by a team of doormen drafted in to stamp out rowdy behaviour.

A review has been granted by Canterbury City Council following complaints from an unnamed applicant.

Powers available to the licensing sub-committee when it meets on Tuesday include full revocation of the bar’s licence, or mandatory modifications of its conditions.

In guidance supplied to the committee, the council states: “Where premises are found to be trading irresponsibly, the licensing authority should not hesitate, where appropriate to do so, to take tough action to tackle problems at the premises and, where other measures are deemed insufficient, to revoke the licence.”
