It comes after its clothing stores were shut at the start of the coronavirus lockdown - but food halls remained open.

The chain has planned the reopening of the majority of the spaces in these stores for June 15.

Shoppers will be met by a staff member when they arrive who will manage the flow of customers in and out.

Hand sanitiser will be available and the baskets to use will all be metal ones - which the company says are easier to be cleaned regularly.

Shop safely signs and floor markings will be displayed to remind shoppers of social distancing rules and to make it easier to find products.

Close-contact services will be closed - including bra, suit and kids footwear fittings.

Cafés will remain closed to sit in but selected stores will offer takeaway hot drinks.

These include Whitstable, Maybrook Retail Park in Canterbury and Bluewater.

Perspex screens will be installed and contact payments will be encouraged.

Fitting rooms will be shut for now. But M&S's refund policy will remain at 90 days.

It will continue to offer click & collect to all stores, all week, for free.

Andrew Walmsley, M&S’s retail operations director said: "I’ve never been prouder to be part of the M&S team than over these past few months.

"Our store teams have been brilliant at implementing the necessary social distancing and hygiene measures to help customers shop our food, and we’ll be bringing those lessons and insights over to clothing and home."
