A young man killed in a suspected hit and run on the A2 near Canterbury has been named as sociology student Ibrahim Sheikh.

The body of the 22-year-old was discovered lying in the coastbound carriageway near the BP garage shortly after 2am on September 26.

Mr Sheikh, from Leicester, who was studying at the University of Kent, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, with police quickly establishing he had been hit by a vehicle.

Officers closed the seven-mile stretch from Brenley Corner to Harbledown until 8am for specialist officers to examine the scene.

The victim’s family were informed of his death soon after the tragedy.

He has now been formally named by the coroner and an inquest will be opened on Wednesday and adjourned for further inquiries.

The police are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about the incident and the death of Mr Sheikh, who came from Leicester.
