Dog wardens were called to a pet store after a pooch was abandoned there.

Council contractors attended the Pets at Home shop off Sturry Road in Canterbury yesterday after the poor canine was dumped there.

Vets 4 Pets – based inside the store – posted about the incident on social media accompanied by a picture of the doe-eyed dog.

The shop would not comment on the incident or the dog’s condition.

It is understood the canine is a whippet cross – although this has not been confirmed.

Canterbury City Council spokesman Rob Davies said: “We were saddened to see this lovely pooch seems to have been abandoned and we can confirm he is safely being cared for by our contractor, Animal Wardens.

"The standard process will now be followed whereby the owner has seven nights to reclaim him.

“We cannot rule out the possibility there has been a legitimate issue and the owner will come forward.

"If this does not happen after those seven nights, the rehoming process will begin and we are sure there will not be a shortage of people wanting to come forward."
