A fallen tree closed a major route into a city and caused a power cut.

It came down this afternoon on the Harbledown by-pass near Canterbury requiring traffic to be diverted.

Police closed the road between Palmars Cross Hill and the London Road roundabout while contractors from Kent County Council tackled the obstacle.

Traffic in and out of the city was diverted via Summer Hill and Church Hill in Lower Harbledown.

Some properties in the area also suffered power cuts, including the Coach and Horses pub which posted on its Facebook page: "Due to an incident involving a tree and power cables we find ourselves without power.

"We will be closed for the remainder of the day and will reopen, with normal service tomorrow. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The road was reopened from about 4.40pm.
