A council is running its park and ride services for free tomorrow in an effort to ease congestion.

Visitors to Canterbury will be able to use buses to and from Wincheap and New Dover Road free of charge.

Park and ride services in Canterbury will be free of charge on Saturday

The offer coincides with the closure of a key section of the city's ring-road.

Lower Bridge Street will remain shut throughout tomorrow as workers complete their week-long emergency repairs to a broken pipe.

The council hopes the free park and ride service will stop drivers from clogging up the city's road network, and bring in more visitors.

A statement reads: "It’s one of a number of special free days we have coming up over the next few months to promote the service and encourage people who do not normally use it to give it a try."

"We also hope it will help ease congestion with the current emergency roadworks in the city."

The free travel ties in a host of Halloween activities in the city centre organised by the Canterbury Business Improvement District.

Some bus drivers are also set to get creative and will be dressed up in Halloween costumes.

A statement from the local authority continues: "In the run up to Christmas, we will also be offering a variety of parking discounts in Herne Bay and Whitstable.

"Announcements on these will follow in due course."

The city's third park and ride, in Sturry Road, remains shut until 2024.

The council's has mothballed the site in an effort to save £360,000 amid a drastic fall in passenger numbers.
