A WOMAN says she has been left distraught by the theft of her late father's war medals which were stolen in a burglary at her home.

Linda Parkinson also lost personal valuable jewellery following the break-in at the property in Cherry Garden Road, Canterbury.

But she says the loss of the medals, including a Burma Star, Italian Star and rare Yangtze award has devastated the family.

She said: "My father, Joseph Simmonds, was in the Royal Marines and then the Royal Navy for 28 years. He died four years ago but was always very proud of his medals.

"He risked his life for his country and it makes us so mad to think that some thief has now got his grubby hands on them."

The thief also stole several valuable rings, including a cameo which belonged to Mrs Parkinson's grandmother which had been in the family for nearly a century. A gold watch dating from the 1930s which used to belong to her great-aunt was also taken.

Among the other medals taken was an Atlantic Star, African Star, Mediterranean Star as well as well as a long service medal inscribed with Mr Simmonds name.

Mrs Parkinson added: "I am just praying that someone knows where the medals are or they are offered for sale to someone who is suspicious. If I only got them back I would be a lot happier."
