Whitstable's traffic nightmare: Tell us what you think

The Whitstable Gazette has launched a survey to ask residents for their views on the town’s traffic problem.

After weeks of debate in the newspaper and on social media about how to solve town-centre congestion, we want you to tell us what needs to be done.

The Whitstable Gazette is asking for views on the town's traffic problem.

Ideas include a one-way system, first discussed by councillors back in 1948, after a new campaign 1 Way 4 Whit was launched by Harbour Street resident Charlotte Cornell.

City council leader John Gilbey backed calls for a one-way system.

The council published its draft transport strategy last week – which included £3million plans for a park and ride on the outskirts of Whitstable.

A £3 million park and ride was included in the council's draft transport strategy.

This week, we are calling on you to tell us what you believe is the right solution to the town’s traffic headache. From today, you have two weeks to fill in a questionnaire and post it to us.

Alternatively you can fill in an online survey or leave a form in boxes at The Horsebridge Centre or Budgens supermarket in High Street for collection.

We intend to publish the results and present them to the city council for study.

Key local figures have given their support to the questionnaire.

Councillor Neil Baker said: “There are lots of possibilities out there. The important thing is to find a solution to improve the traffic flow.

“It would be great if a debate was led by residents and traders because it will affect them the most. The more ideas that come forward the better.”

Charlotte Cornell launched her 1 Way 4 Whit campaign over safety fears.

Ms Cornell (above) supported the survey. She said: “I am delighted the community has a proactive voice. Finding out what concerns the community might, finally, stop the decades of stagnation that have caused these tailbacks, near-misses and traffic nightmares.”

To take part please cut out the survey on page 5 of this week's Whitstable Gazette and post it to us at Gazette House, 5-8 Estuary View Business Park, Whitstable CT5 3SE.

Alternatively, you can fill in an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Whitstable
