Chicken-lovers shell out to get trendy blue eggs at Churchmans Farm in Faversham

The song asks ‘how do you like your eggs in the morning?’ and at a farm near Faversham the answer is blue.
Churchmans Geeno Blue hybrid hens, reared at Churchmans Farm, near Painters Forstal, are unique because they produce their blue eggs all year round. Normally pure breed hens produce fewer eggs from September to April.
These chickens have been developed through cross breeding and are available to families looking to have their own.
Churchmans Farm owner Andrew Bruce said: “Nothing stands still and the demand now is for exotic looking hens which lay coloured eggs. People just like to go with trends.”
The farm buys hens from a breeder when they are day-old chicks. Mr Bruce and his wife Mary rear them on site to reduce stress and ensure none of them carries infections.
They sell 6,000 chickens a year and have 1,600 customers on their mailing list, the majority of which are families with a coop in their back garden.
Mr Bruce said: “They want decent eggs and want their children to have an interest. Many have parents who kept hens and like the idea of going back to the old life.
“The number of people who come here and pick up two or three hens shows it is very popular. It has become a flourishing business.”
The couple, who have run the farm since 1998, are hoping to begin rearing chickens which lay green-coloured eggs by the end of the year. They insist their new blue variety are worth a try.
Mr Bruce said: “They have a much thicker, richer yolk.”

Mrs Bruce, who looks after the chickens, said: “They are just lovely. They have a deep yellow yolk and the chickens are prolific layers.
"The thing about hybrids is they are so much more friendly and amenable. They don’t mind being picked up and they are wonderful with children.
“So many customers say they follow them into the house. Like any pet, the more time you give them, the more they will reward you. They have all got great characters, just like people.”
