No hospitals in Kent will receive a boost from Boris Johnson's £1.8 billion pledge for the NHS.

The new prime minister revealed the cash will be used to buy vital new kit and secure upgrades for 20 hospitals across the country.

More details released today show that none of those 20 are in Kent.

The closest hospitals to benefit from the cash injection will be in London and the Isle of Wight.

The future of healthcare in the east remains up in the air as health chiefs taking their time in deciding whether to centralise services in either Ashford or Canterbury.

A number of hospitals in the north and in the Midlands will benefit from the £1.8 billion, while much of the south will not receive funding.

Health secretary Matt Hancock said: "I love the NHS - and so do the millions of taxpayers and their families cared for by our NHS every month.

"We owe it to them to make sure they can get the best treatment in the best hospitals.

"On top of the extra £33.9 billion a year we are giving the NHS, today we are making a downpayment for the future of NHS buildings and facilities, with a £1.8 billion fund to revitalise our hospitals and immediate funding for bigger wards, better mental health units, and state of the art children’s hospitals in areas that need them the most."
