A long-established major clothing chain is shutting up a high street shop, blaming tough economic conditions.

French Connection has been trading in Canterbury High Street for almost two decades but the fashion brand has been struggling in recent years and announced it would be closing at least 10 sites.

Closing down sale signs have now gone up in the branch, which staff say will shut on Sunday with the loss of jobs.

It will add to the depressed retail scene in the city centre where there have been numerous shop closures in the last year.

The biggest name to fall has been Nasons department store which closed in September last year.

Others nearby to also close recently are Poundworld and Crew Clothing, while several other business leases are up for sale, including those in the Burgate and Buttermarket.

Founded in 1972, the French Connection brand hit the mainstream headlines in 1997 with its controversial FCUK advertising campaign.

It has stores in Maidstone and Ashford.
