MP Rosie Duffield condemns Canterbury attack on 'young exchange student' in Whitefriars

An attack which has left a teenage boy seriously injured in a London hospital has been branded a "shameful stain" on Canterbury.

The youngster - thought to be an exchange student from Germany - was reportedly set upon in Rose Lane at about 6pm last night.

This morning, the city's MP, Rosie Duffield, has said she is "absolutely devastated" by news of the assault.

She tweeted: "This is a horrific and shameful stain on our usually very peaceful city.

"Extremely thankful for our wonderful police, ambulance crews and all who came to assist."

There was a heavy police presence in the city last night, and a police cordon in place in Rose Lane - between Watling Street and Tesco Extra.

The victim was rushed by air ambulance to a London hospital, where he remains..

A 16-year-old boy was later arrested in St Peter's Place on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and is still in custody.
