Plans to open a new grilled chicken restaurant in Canterbury have failed to take off.

Roosters Piri Piri, a rapidly growing firm hoping to rival Nando's, had its eyes set on a vacant unit on the city's ring road in Lower Bridge Street.

But the proposals, which were submitted to the city council's planning team last summer, have now been axed.

The reason behind the application withdrawal has been put down to the landlord of the site refusing to allow a flue to be installed.

With more than 50 outlets across the country, Piri Piri prides itself on offering a healthy grilled chicken service which can "change the landscape of the fast-food sector".

Offering a menu including burgers, wraps and meat platters, the firm was kickstarted in 1992.

Had the plans for the Canterbury branch followed through, the restaurant would have been open from 11am to 11pm.

It would have taken up residence in one of the 11 ground floor units within the Invicta House parade of shops.
