Police were called to the Guildhall in Canterbury last night after protestors stormed a meeting of the city council.

Around 10 people carrying a banner and placards, and led by Whitstable campaigner Bunny LaRoche, entered the chamber to object to proposed job losses among the authority’s workforce.

This followed a recent announcement that the council is having to slash more than £3 million from its budget over the next three years and that up 100 jobs could be lost.

Although there were no financial decisions being made at the meeting, the protestors continuously chanted "they say cutback, we say fight back", preventing the meeting from continuing.

One objector began filming the proceedings on a video camera but was confronted by the chief executive Colin Carmichael, who ordered him to stop.

The group left after about 10 minutes when the police arrived but pledged to return to make their protest at future council meetings.
