A Maidstone teenager who assaulted a passenger who complained about his group smoking on a platform has been given a police caution.

It follows an "unprecedented response" to an appeal by British Transport Police.

The assault started when the victim challenged three young men and a woman for smoking on a platform at Canterbury East station late on Saturday, June 21.

They ignored him but he was attacked as soon as the train pulled out of Canterbury East station.

The attack continued until the train reached Selling and the 42-year-old victim, from Gillingham, fell to the ground and suffered cuts to his nose and forehead.

The men and woman left the train at Selling. The victim continued on the train to Faversham, where he reported the assault to staff and police.

PC Craig Twyman, who led the investigation, said: “We had an unprecedented response to our appeal and I would like to thank the many members of the public who called and text in with information.

"I would also like to thank the local media for their assistance in publicising the appeal.”
