An expanding burger chain has opened its first restaurant in Kent today.

7Bone launched in Canterbury city centre at midday after long-held plans to open in the county.

Founded by entrepreneurs Matthew Mollicone and Richard Zammit in Southampton in 2013, the chain was yet to have a base in Kent.

About 20 staff started their new jobs as the first customers were welcomed to the eatery on the corner of Burgate and Butchery Lane.

The prime site was previously the home of another burger firm, Byron.

But the company entered administration last summer and the Canterbury branch never reopened after lockdown.

7Bone marketing executive Joe McEvoy spoke to KentOnline about launching in the city.

"We opened the doors at midday and the first customer was in bang on 12, so there are a fair few people who have heard the news and spread the word," he said.

"It’s a lovely location being next to the Cathedral and right in the heart of the city. We’ve had a very good start and long may it continue.

"We’ve stayed true to our values since the day we opened. It’s the same butcher and baker we always used.

"We’re licensed to serve pink burgers so we’re one of the only companies in the UK who can do that, so it’s quite a unique offering."

The firm does not use a booking system, so diners are served on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A range of burgers are on the menu, including the 'prince charles is overrated'

The menu ranges from beef burgers and hot dogs to chicken sandwiches, as well as a selection of craft beers and cocktails.

"We don’t take ourselves too seriously and it’s all a bit rough around the edges - no airs and graces," Mr McEvoy added.

"Be prepared to get messy when you eat."

There are a range of quirky names for the burgers, including Prince Charles is Overrated, Ronald's Revenge and Donnie J Trump.

Asked about the names, Mr McEvoy said: "Don’t read too much into it. It’s all just tongue-in-cheek and good fun.

"It’s mainly stuff that has been put together after a few beers. Some of them have stories or are off-the-cuff."

A huge brookie stack

Work kitting out the 7Bone site has been ongoing during recent months and bosses had been tight-lipped on an opening date.

7Bone will operate from midday until 10pm between Sunday and Thursday, and 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
