Discount retailer Poundland has recorded a surge in sales for its pregnancy test kits since the nationwide lockdown was enforced.

Sales have shot up by 25% in the past month - sparking speculation of a 'coronababy' boom in nine months' time.

The chain has kept most of its stores open to sell essential items during the crisis.

The sales surge for the £1 test kits comes as doctors urge those with contraception queries to call GP surgeries instead of attending in person.

Poundland trading director Tim Bettley said: "If you’ve been wondering how people have been spending their time in lockdown, we’ve found the answer.

"Couples under the same roof don’t need to worry about social distancing and they’ve been getting up close and comfortable, as our sales figures show.

"Based on our sales, Britain should be preparing for a baby boom as couples found more entertaining ways to relax than watching box sets or doing jigsaws."
