Fuel prices across the county are being slashed after Sainsbury’s bosses cut their prices by 2p.

Rivals Tesco, Asda and Morrisons all followed suit by announcing similar dips – seeing prices drop to their lowest this year.

Along with its 309 forecourts across the country, the Sainsbury’s filling station in Chestfield now has prices below 111p per litre.

Asda has also said its customers will not have to pay more than 110.7p per litre for petrol or diesel.

The reduction means drivers can now fill up for up to £2 less than they did in April.

Elsewhere, Tesco confirmed it has dropped petrol and diesel by up to 2p at all 500 of its filling stations.

Morrisons also confirmed a drop by tweeting: “Good news for motorists, we’re cutting the price of our unleaded and diesel by up to 2p per litre.”

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams says more price falls can be expected.

He said: “This is great news for motorists and we hope it will spark a fuel cut frenzy on forecourts across the country.

“Supermarkets are proving that they are prepared to react to falling wholesale prices by passing on the benefit to families just ahead of the busy summer holiday season.

“The oil price, the biggest variable affecting UK fuel prices, is now at its lowest level in more than six months.

“The pound has gained against the dollar lately – meaning the outlook for lower priced fuel over the weeks ahead is positive.”
