Some residents are in a bit of a lather after pranksters poured soap into a park fountain.

The water feature in the Dane John Gardens in Canterbury was spotted swamped by suds this morning.

A picture of the foam-covered fountain was shared in Canterbury Residents Group on Facebook, with the jokers' antics dividing opinion.

Lola Hopkins, who took the photo, said: "Someone's given the fountain a good old clean".

Martin Bates wrote: "That's a lot of egg whites in that meringue."

Yet others were less impressed at the sight of the giant bubble bath.

Steve Hayes asked: "Who cleans that mess up? Who takes care of any wildlife affected?"

Peter Hasted said: "Everyone laughs until they find out it's their tax that pays the £1000s to clean it up."

And Matthew Blackmore added: "They will end up getting rid of the fountain, okay for people but animals love it too, shame really."

Group admin Edd Withers said that while he doesn't support vandalism, this is "the oldest prank in the city".

And today's mischief is far from the first time the public fountain - installed in 1999 when the park was being refurbished - has been targeted.

A picture from 2011 shows how it was left brimming over with bubbles.

Meanwhile, in 2002 a park keeper spotted a prankster pouring two bottles of shampoo into the fountain.

He called police, who arrested the culprit.

When the 42-year-old before magistrates, the court was told it cost nearly £100 to clean out the fountain and its filters.

Pranksters also targeted a waterfall in Madeira Walk, Ramsgate back in 2017, making it full of foam and bubbles which spilled out into the road.

The same waterfall had been vandalised a few years prior to this and been turned completely green.
