Friends and family are rallying round a sports-mad 14-year-old who has undergone a full leg amputation as he continues to battle cancer.

Miles Stockwell, from Herne Bay, was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer in December, after an “extensive” tumour was found in his left knee and spread up his leg.

Medics had initially hoped they could save the limb, but Simon Langton pupil Miles was given the devastating news it must be removed.

The sporty teen’s football club, Whitstable Town FC, are holding a fundraising day this weekend in a bid to support brave Miles through the next stages of his fight.

His mum, Sarah Luckhurst, describes finding out that Miles needed an amputation as “a really dark time”.

“It was really hard for him to hear,” she said this week, from a London hospital where Miles is receiving chemotherapy.

“At the beginning of his journey, if someone had told us this was going to happen, you wouldn’t have thought you could get through it.

“But it’s amazing how you learn to adjust very quickly to things.

“Although Miles has had a horrendous loss, he’s still here and he’s still fighting and he’s still enjoying life.”

Miles underwent his amputation on April 5, but his prognosis remains unclear.

“He’ll finish chemo in August, all being well,” explained Sarah. “We’re really, really hoping then that his prognosis will be really good. But at the moment, it’s still uncertain.”

In the meantime, Miles is adjusting well to his new life as an amputee.

A natural sportsman, Miles loved playing cricket for Whitstable U15s, played roller hockey for Herne Bay for 10 years, and is a much-loved member of Whitstable Town FC.

Determined to stay active, he has now taken up darts.

“Miles is incredibly strong and he just gets on with things,” said Sarah.

“That sportsman in him is still there, and his determination and his resilience.

“We’re very much hoping that further down the line, he’ll be able to access some different sports - there’s a great amputees’ football team.

“Hopefully he’ll still be loving his sport, but in a different way.”

Inundated with requests from friends and family keen to help, Miles’ family has now launched a fundraising page.

“It’s really important that we’re able to help him access things, whether it’s rehabilitation, therapy, prosthetics, treatments if that were necessary,” said Sarah.

Fundraising day at town football club

This Sunday, Whitstable Town FC is holding a huge fundraising day for Miles, with a portion of proceeds going to charity Teenage Cancer Trust.

From 9.30am there will be league matches, while entertainment including a DJ, live music and food will run from 1pm. There will also be a raffle featuring thousands of pounds worth of prizes, including £500 in cash, a seven-night stay in a Bangkok hotel, a £100 Fenwick voucher, a TV, an iPad, a barbecue and a laptop.

Sarah thanked Miles’ Whitstable coach Matt Barman, and his wife Leigh, for organising the day.

“The response has just been amazing,” she said. “We’re just completely bowled over, and the messages of support we’ve had really make a difference. It’s made a horrendous situation more bearable, and it does mean a lot.”
