The nervous wait was finally over on Thursday for hundreds of A-level students across the district.

Another record-breaking year of results saw students pick up dozens of A* grades for the first time.

At Simon Langton Grammar School for Girls, Canterbury, head girl Charlotte Burford-Newell picked up five of her own.

Charlotte, 18, from Barham, recorded top marks in maths, further maths, biology, physics and chemistry and will study medicine at University College, London from next month.

Round the corner at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys, 35 per cent of students gained either A* or A grades. Eight students will be off to Oxford or Cambridge.

At the Archbishop's School, Canterbury, head teacher Michael Liddicoat and staff were celebrating another year of success.

Fifty-six students achieved a 90 per cent A to E grade pass rate. Five students also achieved A* grades in art, physics and maths.

The vast majority will now be off to their first choice universities.

Canterbury High School, shortly to become one of the country’s new outstanding academies, achieved its best A-level results ever, with a large majority of students gaining the highest grades.

The average A-level grade was an A/B, with the highest performing subjects being sport, English and performing arts.

St Anselm’s Catholic School, Canterbury, had a 98 per cent pass rate at grades A-E.

Chaucer Technology School, Canterbury, celebrated its best results for 10 years with a 90 per cent pass rate, up 10 per cent from last year.

Results at Whitstable Community College showed a 23 per cent rise A-C grades compared to last year.

Overall the pass rate was 82 per cent, the same as last year and the average point score has also risen, by 17 per cent.

Students at Herne Bay High School were celebrating record-breaking A-level results this week - but many were still left sweating on university places.

All 73 pupils bagged at least two A-levels for the first time in the school's history.

At the Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Faversham, results were hailed as the best ever in the school's history. A 99.1 per cent pass rate was achieved by the 106 students, with 19 achieving at least three A grades.
