Singing duo Matt Clubb and Sueleen Fletcher from Canterbury have won a place in the live finals of the hit new BBC One show, The Voice.

The couple went head to head on Sunday night in a sing-off against fellow contestant Lindsey Butler, sharing the vocals to the Bruce Springstein rock song, Born to Run.

It was then down to their coach and mentor Tom Jones to choose who he would be taking through to the live shows. To their obvious joy, the Welsh superstar picked Matt and Sueleen to be among the final 20 acts after praising their harmonies.

The 'grunge’ music-loving duo are well known on the local music scene, playing in a band called Amber Room.

Matt, 34, is a chef at the Cherry Tree pub in Jewry Lane where the landlord has given him time off in his bid for stardom.

Customers and staff were cheering him on as they watched the show in the pub on Sunday night.

Sueleen, also 34, is a teaching assistant at Bridge and Patrixbourne School where pupils have excitedly been watching the duo’s progress.

On their MySpace site the couple say: “No hype or clever gimmicks, no rehearsed stage performances, no egos, trendy clothes or glossy hair styles. Just pure songwriting, communication, integrity and above all.....fun.”

After their debut appearance Matt said: “It was a totally new experience for us - terrifying but a huge buzz at the same time. It’s a massive opportunity for a lot of people to hear us and although we write our own songs we have done cover versions for the show.”

Now in 'Team Tom’, the couple are hard at rehearsals in London and face going head to head with will.i.am’s acts on Saturday night.
