Canterbury has been ranked the 16th least affordable city in the UK for housebuyers in a new study published by Halifax.

Canterbury has been ranked one of the UK's least affordable cities following a study by Halifax

It found that the amount a resident would usually fork out for a property stood at more than £365,000, while average salaries are about £40,500 per year.

Out of the UK's 69 cities, Winchester was identified as the least affordable, replacing previous table-topper Oxford, with homes now 14 times annual earnings for those living and working there.

Halifax managing director Russell Galley said: “Affordability is significantly better in the north.

"There are now just two cities – Plymouth and Portsmouth – with better-than-average affordability in the south.”
