A HUGE theme park could be built on the Kingsmead site at Canterbury as part of ambitious plans to redevelop the area.

The 20-acre attraction, called Time Travellers, would offer visitors an historical trip through the ages - from the Roman occupation to the 1966 World Cup.

The multi-million pound venture is likely to prove the most controversial element of the Kingsmead redevelopment plan which goes out to public consultation next week.

The council's head of strategic planning Robin Cooper stresses the proposals - which include about 300 new homes, a primary school, land for a new theatre to replace the Marlowe and an hotel are all up for discussion.

The theme park is being proposed by a leisure company which has approached the council with the idea.

The public are being invited to view the plans at exhibitions at Northgate Community Centre on January 25/26 and the Kingsmead Leisure Centre on January 27/28.

Mr Cooper said the planning stage could take at least a year and the redevelopment five years.
