Travellers who have pitched up in a school car park have promised to move on before term begins.

The head teacher of St Anselm's Catholic School in Canterbury , where a number of caravans are currently situated , says the school has spoken to the "polite and pleasant" group of people living in the encampment.

The travellers are understood to have moved onto the site a couple of days ago.

The school, which is currently closed for the summer holidays, is due to reopen to pupils on Wednesday.

But executive principal Mike Walters said: "We have spoken to the traveller community who have taken up residence at St Anselm’s.

"We have explained that pupils will return next week and community members have assured us they will have left the site before then.

"The individuals we have spoken to have been polite and pleasant in all our dealings with them."

Police say they were made aware of the "traveller incursion on private land" yesterday morning.

A spokesman said: "Officers have attended and are working with the landowner regarding the matter."
