A university with a campus in Kent has decided to ditch all face-to-face classes in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bosses at the University of Greenwich - which has a campus in Chatham - will stop lectures of move to online learning as of tomorrow (Monday).

A statement from the university reads: "In light of the uncertainty and disruption being caused by Covid-19, we have decided to stop all face-to-face classes on all of our campuses from Monday (March 16) until further notice.

"The welfare of all our students and staff continues to be our main priority.

"All campuses will remain open and students are able to access our libraries, IT and other services as usual. Our staff will be on campus on Monday as normal, unless they have received personal medical guidance not to be.

"Face-to-face assessments and examinations that were due to take place from Monday will now need to be rearranged so that they can take place remotely. Specific information about individual programmes will be shared direct with students from Monday onwards.

"We will review this decision on an ongoing basis. We recognise that this is an unprecedented and fast moving situation and wish to support all our staff and students through this as far as possible."

Leaders of the University of Kent and Christ Church which have campuses in Medway and Canterbury, have yet to announce whether they will be following suit.

Yesterday, the University of Liverpool announced it was suspending all face-to-face lectures and tutorials for the remainder of the academic year.

So far, there are 13 confirmed cases of the virus in Kent, and there are at least 1,300 diagnosed across the country.

Uni of Kent chiefs say the health, welfare and safety of students, staff and visitors is their "key priority".

A statement on the website reads: "We are continuing to monitor updates on Covid-19 closely and providing as much advice, care and support as we can to our university community."

Christ Church bosses are yet to make an announcement.
