Eat My Words: We tried the Carolina Reaper hot wings challenge at Wing Kingz in Canterbury

As I sat down to take on a hot wings challenge at a new Kent restaurant, I was handed a waiver by staff.

“There may be a risk of personal injury, illness or possible loss of life,” the sheet of paper read.

I was starting to think this was a bad idea.

It was back in November, when Wing Kingz first announced it would be opening a branch in Kent, that we decided someone should take on the restaurant’s ‘Earn Your Wingz’ test of endurance.

I volunteered at the time - and then put it to the back of my mind.

But then, in March, the new sports bar in Sun Street, Canterbury, opened and what had felt like a distant event suddenly loomed large.

Last week I had a look at the restaurant’s social media accounts to see how others attempting the challenge had fared.

I didn't like what I saw, with many failing to finish the plate, beads of sweat dripping off their brow and a look of great discomfort on their faces.

Nevertheless, I was a man of my word and made my way down to the restaurant on Tuesday evening.

I took a seat and ordered a pint of Forged Irish Stout, which is owned by UFC star Conor Mcgregor, as I had not tried it before.

However, I could not enjoy the drink for long as it was time to inform the staff that I wanted to take on the challenge.

One worker said: “Are you sure? You are crazy. I like spice but not even I would do that.

“All the people I have seen take on the challenge have cried afterwards!”

At least they were being honest.

But before I could even begin, I was handed the ominous waiver.

At the bottom of the form, it said: “You’ve got this far? You’re brave! Guess all that’s left to say is good luck – we promise you’re going to need it.”

As I signed my life away, staff told me only 12 people had attempted the hot wings challenge in Canterbury, with just three being successful.

Signing my life away

The rules are simple. You have to eat 15 wings in 10 minutes and endure the five-minute “burn time” after completion.

If you somehow manage to do it, you get the £13.95 meal for free and your name is added to the hall of fame on the wall.

During the challenge, you are allowed one drink of your choice and must remain seated throughout. I opted for an Oreo milkshake.

All 15 chicken wings were coated in Wing Kingz’s Carolina Reaper sauce – made with the world's hottest pepper.

The Carolina Reaper measures up to 2.2 million Scoville heat units, about 200 times hotter than your garden variety jalapeño.

The new restaurant had a host of TVs displaying live sport

While I waited anxiously, I had a wander around the new restaurant.

Sport is definitely a key part of the Wing Kingz franchise, with multiple TVs playing live sport, signed t-shirts from Premier League stars such as Ivan Toney and murals to the likes of Lionel Messi and Kobe Bryant.

The restaurant itself was cleanly presented and the food being served to other customers looked incredible.

But soon it was time to return to my seat. I put on the black gloves provided and was told to keep my hands away from my eyes at all times.

As soon as the wings were put in front of me, the smell of the spice hit the back of my throat. I was very pessimistic about how many I would be able to eat.

The manager took his position behind me and started the timer.

I was terrified, but I sank my teeth into the first wing and just tried to power through.

The initial bite was deceivingly manageable, but by the time the first wing was eaten, I could feel a fiery sensation on my tongue.

With each bite it got worse and the intense spiciness hit every corner of my mouth.

It was without a doubt the spiciest thing I had ever eaten.

I was in the zone and managed to clear five of the wings in the first two minutes.

But this is where the problems started to strike. I could feel my throat swelling up with each mouthful, making it harder and harder to swallow the food.

My nose was running, my eyes were watering and the staff were gathered around trying to push me on.

But my pace began to slow and every second I waited to take the next bite, the hotter my mouth seemed to be getting.

After just over seven minutes, I had reached my tipping point.

I ate a total of 10 wings and knew if I continued to push myself then I would probably vomit.

It’s quite hard to put into words how difficult this was and even though I’d finished eating, the pain didn’t stop.

The milkshake did very little to ease things and I felt extremely lightheaded.

Unless you are very good with spice, I would definitely not recommend this to anyone.

As I am writing this, the day after the challenge, I am still dealing with the effects of the wings and I can safely say I will never do this again.

They are still playing havoc with my taste buds. I had my morning coffee and there was no flavour to it at all.

Despite my ordeal, the staff at Wing Kingz (who did warn me not to do it) were all fantastic and very friendly.

I will certainly be visiting again - but this time to try some of the less spicy food they have on offer.
