The Kent doctor badly injured when a huge wave hit the racing yacht she was sailing in off San Francisco is the consultant in occupational health at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

Mother-of-two Jane Hitchens, 50, who lives in Boughton near Canterbury, was taking part in the Clipper 11-12 Round The World Race but has now being taken ashore by a coastguard clipper and is being treated in hospital for broken ribs and suspected internal injuries.

Dr Hitchens was the most seriously hurt of four of the 13 strong crew when the wave smashed down on their craft, the 70ft Geraldton Western Australia, 200 miles off the Californian coast and only 400 miles from the finishing line in San Francisco Bay.

She had taken a year's sabbatical from her job to prepare and take part in the event which largely involves amateur yachtsmen and women.

Friend and neighbour Jill Lenor said: "I heard there had been an accident but when I found out Jane had been hurt it was quite alarming. I am sure she is good hands and she will have her family with her as they were already planning to meet her at the next stop. I have been in regular contact with her via email and skype throughout the trip and I know she wanted a challenge."
