A lottery player in Canterbury is sitting on a £1 million win - but has just four weeks left to claim the prize.

Numbers on a ticket bought in the district came up in a draw last December, landing its owner the life-changing sum.

But National Lottery bosses say the jackpot remains unclaimed, with the deadline of June 1 fast approaching.

They are now urging people isolating at home to check old tickets to see if they're sitting on a goldmine.

Andy Carter from The National Lottery said: “It’s a good opportunity to dig out and check those old lottery tickets - a five-minute check might just unearth a fortune.

"We know that lots of players often have unchecked tickets lying around, and this is an opportunity for a bit of spring cleaning which might turn out to be very worthwhile."

The winner managed to match the five main numbers - nine, 13, 21, 25, 28 and 31 - as well as the bonus ball, which was one, to become a millionaire on December 4.

There have been a number of past lottery winners who took their time before cashing in their tickets.

One of them was self-employed builder Andrew Clark, who waited six weeks after a EuroMillions draw to claim the £76.3 million jackpot two years ago.

Mr Carter is urging the person with the winning ticket to call 0333 2345050 to claim the seven-figure sum.

He added: “If you locate any previously unchecked tickets down the back of the sofa or in one of your old winter coat pockets, there is no need to venture out to the shops to have it checked."

If no one comes forward before the summer deadline, the winnings will go towards National Lottery-funded projects across the UK.
