An alcoholic who was angry he'd been made homeless threw a bin at a police car.

Richard Moore also lobbed a metal frame at the patrol vehicle, which was parked near the A&E department of the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

The 45-year-old caused dents to the bonnet of the Vauxhall Astra. He was arrested and later charged with criminal damage.

Moore appeared at at Folkestone Magistrates' Court last week, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Julie Farbrace prosecuting said the incident took place at about 1.30am on Wednesday, January 25.

"The police vehicle was at the William Harvey Hospital by the ambulance bay," she said.

"He picked up a metal frame and threw it at the car and it hit the window. He then got a 4ft long black bin and threw that and it caused dents to the bonnet."

The court was also told Moore made admissions to officers during interview, but it was not disclosed why he had been made homeless.

District Judge Justin Barron heard Moore had at least 22 previous convictions for dissimilar and similar matters - and had previously been given a suspended sentence in 2019.

The judge was told the defendant was an alcoholic and had been made homeless in November last year.

The court heard Moore, who is of no fixed address but gave a postal address of Sturry Road in Canterbury, had no excuse for his actions and that it had been a stupid thing to have done.

Judge Barron fined him £233 for the offence and ordered he pay £200 compensation to Kent Police for the damage.

Moore was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £95 and £85 costs.
