FORMER Kent cricket captain Mark Benson is looking for a family who tried to help him after an articulated lorry cab shunted him off the road in pouring rain.

Mr Benson, who lives at Westbere, near Canterbury, was with Kent County Cricket Club as a left-handed batsman from 1980 and captain from 1991 until he left in 1995. He also played one Test match for England against India

He is now a first class umpire and was returning from a game in Guildford on Friday, July 25, when the incident occurred at around 4.15pm where the A249 Detling Hill meets the M2 south on the way to Canterbury.

"As the steeply curved slip road goes from two lanes from one I let an articulated lorry pull in front of me," said Mr Benson, who drives a dark blue Peugeot 306.

"Then a vehicle behind, a light blue articulated lorry cab, shunted me off the road onto the hard shoulder.I was shocked and wrote down what I could remember of his registration number but then got back on the road and attempted to catch him up to verify the information."

As Mr Benson was doing so another vehicle, which he remembers to be possibly a red Sierra or similar, flagged him down and said they had taken the registration number.

"It was a couple with children in the car," said Mr Benson. "They explained they didn't have a pen so said they had phoned home with the number.

"They said I should call them later that day to get the details but the mobile phone number they gave me has been on answerphone ever since. I'd like to hope they were decent people and I hope they will contact the police."

Mr Benson's Peugeot has a dent in the back right-hand side. The registration number he wrote down was N119 JWY. He has reported the matter to police.
