A Kent University looks set to have plans for a new £8million concert hall approved.

Canterbury Christ Church University has launched a multi-million pound appeal to help pay for the first purpose-built centre for performance, rehearsal and music therapy in Kent.

The ambitious plans, to be sited in the grounds of the former St Gregory’s Church in Canterbury, were launched with a concert of choral and instrumental music, given by university’s staff and students and by musicians-in-residence the Maggini String Quartet.

Project patron Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen’s Music, said: “I think this is just about the most exciting thing which has happened around here for hundreds of years.

“However, this is not only for the university but for the whole community and this is exactly the kind of real educational work we should all be involved with.”

The 350-seat concert hall will also have space for rehearsals and workshops and will be for the local community.
