A teenager arrested on suspicion of causing the death of his girlfriend in a car crash will remain on bail while inquiries continue.

Mentesh Da Silva, 18, from Teynham, is alleged to have been driving a black Renault Clio dangerously when it left Shalloak Road, Canterbury, and hit a tree at 12.20am on August 30.

His girlfriend, 18-year-old Emily Laker, was a front seat passenger in the car and died at the scene.

Da Silva was seriously hurt and rushed to a London hospital, while a third teenager, who was in the back of the car, escaped with minor injuries.

He had collected Emily from the Tyler’s Kiln pub in Tyler Hill where she had been working on the night of August 30.

They are thought to have been heading into Canterbury.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which left the road shut for eight hours as accident investigators inspected the scene.

Da Silva's bail was this week extended until January 25.
