Bike 'grabbed' from young man in Canterbury centre robbery

A visually impaired young man has been robbed in Canterbury in broad daylight.

Lewis Hughan was walking through Greyfiars Park in Stour Street on Monday, when he was approached by a man who asked if he could buy his bike – a black and chrome Darley Free Spirit folding bike.

The man thought to be in his late 50s, with fair, short spiky hair and dark clothing.

Police spokesman Natalie Hardy said: "The victim, in his 20s, declined and the man walked away but came back a few moments later, put his hands on the handle bars, threatened him and stole the bicycle."

Lewis took to social media to share news of the incident.

"He grabbed the bike and pulled it off me and rode off around Greyfriars park," he wrote.

He also described seeing a younger man, aged about 40, and a young girl who was wearing a pink raincoat.

"They watched it happen and were with the man who stole it from me," said Lewis. "I'm not hurt, just very shaky.

"I'm visually impaired and don't have much sight. This bike means a lot to me and is my way of getting around town."

Police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 01843 222289, quoting ZY/049048/18.
